Richard Branson & Bill Gates can be mentioned by anyone on Linkedin, even if they aren't your 1st level connections.

Mentioning is a great feature. And if you use it well, the mentioned ones might even read, or comment on your post.

Here is what Linkedin has to say about this cool feature you have:

Mentioning a connection or other members encourages engagement with your posts and comments. Mentions notify your connections that your post or comment might be relevant to them. In your post or comment, connections mentioned are associated with their profiles. Viewers can click on connection names to navigate to their profiles.
To mention someone in a post:

1. On your LinkedIn homepage, click into the Share an article, photo, video or idea field or click Comment at the bottom of someone else's post.
2. Type "@" and then begin typing a name in the box. You'll see a list of potential people you can mention.
3. Click on the name of the person or people you want to mention from the list and continue typing your message.

Linkedin have some great tips how to best use the mention, and some good to knows:

Here are some other tips on updates with mentions or tags:

• Posts containing mentions or tags will be shared just like any other post.
• The member mentioned will receive a notification on Linkedin.com and by email.
• The post may be shared with the network of the person being tagged.
• If you select the post visibility to be anything other than Public, the tags or mentions for anyone outside of the selected visibility settings will be removed.

Note: A member won’t receive a notification about the mention or tag if they have turned off their notification setting.

It is good to know, that you can control the mentioning and also the tagging on Linkedin.

Removing a Mention or Tag of Yourself

Mentions and tags allow you to notify your connections that you're talking about them in a post, comment, or photo. If you're tagged by another member, you'll receive an email and update on LinkedIn.com notifying you. Your profile will also be linked in the post, comment, or photo.

You can remove the tag from a post or photo on desktop or the mobile app at any time, but removing a profile link from a comment is currently only available on the LinkedIn mobile app.

Removing a mention

To remove a mention from a post or comment:

1. Click the  More icon in the top right corner of a connection's post.
2. Click Remove mention from the list of options that appears.
3. Click Remove.
4. The post will no longer link to your profile.

Once you've removed the mention, your name will still appear in plain text but the link to your profile won't be present.

Removing a tag

To remove a tag from a photo:

1. Click on the  Tag icon on the photo.
2. Click on the  X icon next to the tag with your name to remove the tag.

The member that mentioned you originally won't be notified that you've untagged yourself from the post.

If you don't want any of your connections or other members to tag you in their posts/comments, you can disable mentions and tags by others.

iOS
To remove a mention:

1. Tap the  More icon in the top right corner of the post/comment.
2. Tap Remove mention.
3. Tap Remove.

To remove a tag from a photo:

1. Tap on the  Tag icon on the photo.
2. Tap on the  X icon next to the tag with your name to remove the tag.

Android

To remove a mention:

1. Tap the  More icon in the top right corner of the post/comment.
2. Tap Remove mention.
3. Tap Remove.

To remove a tag from a photo:

1. Tap on the  Tag icon on the photo.
2. Tap on the  X icon next to the tag with your name to remove the tag.

There are even more possibility of controlling the mentions and the tags, controlling the visibility of them.

Controlling Visibility of Your Mentions and Tags

You can mention and tag other members in posts, comments, and photos. However, if you don't want other members to tag you in their posts, comments, and photos, you can disable this feature.
To disable members from tagging you in their posts, comments, and photos:

1. Click the  Me icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage.
2. Select Settings & Privacy from the dropdown.
3. Click the Privacy tab at the top of the page.
4. Under the How others see your LinkedIn activity section, click Change next to Mention or tags by others.
5. Switch the toggle to No.

iOS
To disable members from tagging you in their posts, comments, and photos:

1. Tap your profile picture.
2. Tap the Settings icon in the top right.
3. Under the Account tab, tap Mentions or tags by others.
4. Switch the toggle to No.

Android
To disable members from tagging you in their posts, comments, and photos:

1. Tap your profile picture.
2. Tap the Settings icon in the top right.
3. Under the Account tab, tap Mentions or tags by others.
4. Switch the toggle to No.

Important: 
Disabling this feature means that members can’t mention or tag you in their future content.
It doesn't remove your previous mentions or tags automatically.
